Jones Fire, near Fall Creek, closes forest road, hiking trails, campgrounds | Local

A wildfire about 20 miles east of Eugene has closed a section of Forest Road 18 that leads to Fall Creek as well as several trails and campgrounds, the Forest Service said Saturday.

The Jones Fire, now at 1,700 acres, is ablaze near Forest Road 1817 about nine miles east of Fall Creek Reservoir and about 10 miles northeast of Lowell. It has restricted public access to much of the area. Crews have not yet contained any of the fire, which was sparked by lightning on Thursday.

Forest Road 18 is blocked from the west forest boundary to the Middle Fork Ranger District boundary on the east.

That blocks access to the Fall Creek, Johnny Creek and Tall Trees Old Growth Grove hiking trails.

The following campgrounds also are closed: Fall Creek National Recreation Trail, Dolly Varden, Broken Bowl, Big Pool, Clark Creek, Bedrock and Puma Creek.

These areas will remain closed until further notice, the Forest Service says.
