The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission held a demonstration on bears Thursday at the Central Florida Zoo.

Two bears at the zoo pounded on, tried to bite into and rolled around a bear-resistant garbage can Thursday morning.

Despite the strong smell of peanut butter and honey from inside the container, it was beaten up, but never opened.

FWC held the demonstration to stress the need for people to keep garbage and other things bears like to eat away from them.

“Keeping the attractant, like garbage, away from bears, that is your first and foremost thing to keep your family and neighbors safe,” Mike Orlando, of the FWC, said.

The commission also demonstrated a bear spray, similar to pepper spray.

The FWC reminded everyone to never run from a bear, but instead to make themselves large and back away slowly.
