With fledgling 5G networks just beginning to light up, and more coverage promised for 2019, the first taste of fifth-generation connectivity is nearly upon us. According to Twitter leakster Roland Quandt, the platform will be called Snapdragon 855 and will be manufactured on the 7nm process by TSMC.
5G is the next generation of wireless technology which is set to replace 4G LTE. Weeks after it offered a fleeting glimpse at its next-generation Samsung Galaxy X with a folding 7.3-inch OLED screen, the company is now gearing up to unveil another early peek at a key piece of its 2019 product road map.
"5G will fuel collaboration, connectivity and productivity worldwide, and we're excited to be at the forefront working alongside partners like Qualcomm Technologies to make the transformation to 5G a reality". Qualcomm plans to provide more details about the Snapdragon 855 on Wednesday.

Qualcomm will give us more details on the new Snapdragon 855 mobile platform during the second day of the 2018 Snapdragon Tech Summit. Qualcomm had said that there are now 20 operators and 18 OEMs committed to Qualcomm's vision of 5G, reinforced through the new 5G hardware being announced this week. The 855 is the first commercially-available mobile processor that supports multi-gigabit 5G connectivity, hopefully easing our transition into 5G networks without the need for a complicated or inefficient secondary modem.

The 855 will arrive in high-end Android devices starting partway through next year. Unfortunately, this silicon will be running in smartphones sold outside of the U.S.
Not only that, Qualcomm has stated on stage that the AI Engine on Snapdragon 855 has 2x more performance than its competitors. The updated engine should deliver a 3x performance boost in artificial intelligence features over what we saw with the Snapdragon 845 now found in many Android flagship devices. Near the end of the presentation, however, Alex Katouzian, SVP and General Manager of mobile at Qualcomm revealed the name and some of the features of their next flagship mobile platform.
