California wildfires destroy thousands of structures and force emergency evacuations

Thousands of residents just outside Los Angeles have been ordered to evacuate immediately as a massive wildfire advances, fanned by strong winds.

Approximately 75,000 homes are under evacuation orders throughout Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

"The first part of this fuel bed had not seen fire for many years", Cook said Thursday.

Just 12 minutes after it started Thursday afternoon, the flames spread across USA 101, leaving several drivers temporarily stranded.

Cal State Channel Islands has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the campus due to the fire, and all classes and activities have been canceled this evening, according to a news release from campus officials.

Some 20,000 acres of land have been left scorched in the wake of the fires, which remain zero percent under control as of Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Now a brush fire is threatening the surrounding area. Gaddie explained how his team was able to evacuate Paradise city residents in a short amount of time.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire", said a statement, adding that they had yet to be identified.
