Kavanaugh repeatedly embraces beer drinking in sex assault defense

Earlier in the hearing, Kavanaugh said he enjoyed drinking - the legal drinking age at the time was 18-years-old - but claimed that he never went beyond social norms. "Senior year in high school, people were legal to drink".

At another point, Kavanaugh, who has denied all of Ford's accusations, stated correctly that the drinking age had been 18 in Maryland for "most" of his time in high school, but the age limit had been at 21 for more than seven months before his 18th birthday.

Brett Kavanaugh gave a spirited defense of his conduct and character at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, during which he was accused of drunken sexual assault, but mentioned drinking beer almost 30 times.

Kavanaugh: No. I remember what happened and I think you've probably had beers, Senator? It would have been legal for him to buy and consume beer in D.C., which did not raise its drinking age from 18 to 21 until 1986, for most of his senior year, but it sounds like the parties to which he refers generally happened in Maryland. Sometimes others did. I liked beer.

Klobuchar: "I have no drinking problem, judge". Christine Blasey Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault at a house party in suburban Maryland, where she said both Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge were "stumbling drunk".

He responded, "You're asking about blackout. Klobuchar was going for was a line of questioning that would suggest, first of all, that he drank far more in high school and college than he has admitted", he said, "and that drinking is likely to have impaired his memory such that incidents like the ones that have been alleged could certainly have occurred".

"Nor do I", Kavanaugh concluded. The drinking age in NY initially was 19, but it rose to 21 as of December 1985. "You know, we-whatever the chart says, a blood-alcohol chart". Do you like beer, senator, or not?

"So you're saying there's never been a case where you drank so much that you didn't remember what happened the night before or part of what happened?"

How often Kavanaugh drank to excess in high school and college, and exactly how drunk he was on those occasions, is a matter of some dispute among people who knew him then. Kavanaugh's bio in the senior yearbook notes that he was a member of the "Keg City Club (treasurer) - 100 Kegs or Bust".

Kavanaugh also downplayed his underage drinking and told the committee he had never consumed so much alcohol that he blacked out or woke up unable to recall what he'd done the night before. "We drink beer. We liked beer", he said.
