'I would like to invite six to eight artists from around the world to join me on this mission to the Moon, ' Maezawa said.

During Monday night's announcement, Musk said the whole objective of SpaceX is to "help advance rocket technology to the point where we could potentially become a multi-planet species", and to "extend life beyond Earth and do so as quickly as we can".

In 2017, Mr Musk announced that he would be sending two paying passengers on a loop around the Moon - which was to have launched as early as this year.

In April, Musk posted a picture to Instagram (since removed) of what he described as the "main body tool" for his company's BFR interplanetary spaceship.

These privileged will be the first humans to circumnavigate the Moon since the end of the Apollo program in 1972.

After people responded with questions, Musk weighed in and confirmed that the render of the Big Falcon Rocket, which is still in development, is new and "intentionally" created to resemble one seen in a classic Tintin comic. They will travel on a free return trajectory, carrying the BFR to the moon's far side, the side never seen from Earth, then back to Earth again.

The BFR is a super heavy-lift launch vehicle that will eventually shuttle passengers to the moon and fly people and cargo to Mars.

SpaceX noted in its announcement last week that "only 24 humans have been to the moon in history". He's also asked SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to join him on the flight, to which Musk replied: "Maybe we'll both be on it".

According to Musk's presentation [PDF] previous year, the mighty BFR will stand 118 metres tall when erected on its launchpad, and will be able to lift 150 tons into low Earth orbit with the help of a massive central booster, making it the most powerful rocket ever to fly.

SpaceX has already contributed to space ventures by privately developing a liquid-fuel launch vehicle that orbited the Earth in 2008.

During the same press conference, Musk unveiled an updated design for the BFR rocket; it now stands at 118 meters, making it taller than the original Apollo mission rockets, which sent the first astronauts to the Moon.

Russian and Chinese companies are also working on space tourism plans.

Musk said the pair had paid a "significant" deposit and were "entering this with their eyes open, knowing that there is some risk here".
