The enduring Tropical Storm Helene is picking up speed and accelerating northward at 23 miles per hour with sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.

It's not clear if the storm is expected to strengthen back into a hurricane after it hits the eastern Caribbean.

Severe gales are expected in the United Kingdom, moving from the south west to the north west.

By early afternoon, its winds had weakened to 75 miles per hour, just barely a hurricane and well below the storm's terrifying Category 4 peak of 140 miles per hour earlier in the week. "Catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding are likely", the Hurricane Center said.

Barbados is expected to start feeling the impact of tropical storm Isaac between late tonight and early morning.

"Florence is forecast to be an extremely risky major hurricane as it approaches the USA coast", the NHC said.

"Rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 4 inches are possible across the south-central portion of the Dominican Republic, southwest Haiti and Jamaica", it said.

The turbulent weather is coming off the back of one of number of major storms now raging in the Atlantic, another of which, Hurricane Florence, has caused mass evacuations on the east coast of United States this week.
