Florence becomes a hurricane, takes aim at US Southeast

"Florence is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by Monday night, and is expected to remain an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday", the advisory added. Forecasters also warned that the threat of a life-threatening storm surge was rising. While forecasters say it's too soon to determine the exact timing and a possible landfall for the storm, people from SC to the mid-Atlantic region should closely monitor the approaching storm.

Only ten hurricane have made landfall on the Southeast coast since 1851, and if Florence hits North Carolina as a Category 4 it will be the strongest storm to ever come ashore that far north.

Cooper said the decision to put evacuation orders in place will be left up to local officials, who best know their communities and residents, but predicted that evacuation orders will likely be issued along the coast in the coming days.

While there's been remarkable agreement with the latest forecast models on Florence's track, the "cone of uncertainty" still stretches as far south as Georgia, and as for north as Virginia.

In southeast Virginia, Naval Station Norfolk told its employees they should not leave their vehicles parked at the sprawling base in coming days because of the flood threat.

Risky swells generated by Florence affected Bermuda and have begun to reach parts of the Eastern Seaboard.
