Cindy McCain wrote that "John Kyl is a dear friend of mine and John's". John McCain, R-Ariz., the Arizona Republic reports. A reliable conservative, Kyl has played a key role in guiding Donald Trump's supreme court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through the confirmation process on Capitol Hill, where his hearing began stormily on Tuesday.
Kyl, an attorney, was appointed by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a fellow Republican who called him the best person for the job "regardless of politics" and said he hopes Kyl stays in the post longer. "He understands how the Senate functions, and will make an immediate and positive impact benefiting all Arizonans", Governor Doug Ducey said in a release.
Kyl has acted as a "sherpa" for Kavanaugh following his nomination and has helped to orchestrate his meetings with other senators. In that cycle, voters will get to decide who fills the remainder of McCain's seat through 2022.
Both Meghan McCain and her mother, Cindy, tweeted their support for Kyl, who they described as a friend of the family and a statesman who is well-suited to take up McCain's mantle in the Senate.
"I'm not going to hold my breath on Trump because I'm not going to pass out", Woods said. Prior to his service in the Senate, he was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1987 through 1995.

But Ducey's appointment of Kyl may not curtail speculation because Kyl has not promised to serve until 2020 - when the seat is scheduled to come up for election. John McCain, who died last month at the age of 81. Ducey said he didn't know whether Kyl would stick around until 2020, but that he had committed to serving through this session of Congress. Kyl has said he would not seek re-election. I wish I could say the same for Arizona's other Senator, but that was not my experience with [John] McCain.
Kyl's new stint in the Senate is not likely to last long.
Jon Llewellyn Kyl was born in Nebraska and received his Bachelor of Arts and LLB (short for the Latin for Legum Baccalaureus) which is an undergraduate degree in law.
Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
