Progressive upstart Ayanna Pressley defeats incumbent in Massachusetts Democratic primary

Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley won the Democratic primary Tuesday in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, ousting longtime Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano from the deep-blue, Boston-based district. Ocasio-Cortez worked the late Sen. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley, sending her media attention in the final leg of her campaign.

Pressley signaled on Tuesday that she expected to shake up her own party.

"We won, we won", Pressley says, as she is hugged by numerous people around her.

The 7th District encompasses Boston's residential neighborhoods and its surrounding suburbs, with large Hispanic, black and Asian populations, and is the state's only majority-minority district. She is poised to become the only black member of Massachusetts' mostly male congressional delegation.

He said the party is "getting serious about who its representatives are in terms of not just identity politics but have coalitions resemble the people who are the voters".

Democrats in Florida picked liberal Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum to run for Florida governor, while Democrat Stacey Abrams in Georgia is vying to become the first black woman to serve as governor of any USA state.

If Democrats take the House in November, the state delegation will be in line to lead two committees: the House Rules Committee with Rep. Jim McGovern and Ways and Means with Rep. Richard Neal.

MA senator Elizabeth Warren, a favourite to run in the 2020 Presidential election, was uncontested for the state's Democratic nomination. Robert F. Kennedy, delivered the Democratic response to Trump's State of the Union address earlier this year. Baker will face Democrat Jay Gonzalez in November.

The contest heated up after the 34-year-old Zakim won the endorsement of activists gathered at the Massachusetts Democratic Party convention, beating the 67-year-old incumbent first elected to the office in 1994. Both contended that Baker's support among voters was soft and that his administration had failed to make significant strides in many areas, particularly the problems plaguing the Boston-area transit system known as the "T".
