Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley won the Democratic primary Tuesday in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, ousting longtime Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano from the deep-blue, Boston-based district. Ocasio-Cortez worked the late Sen. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley, sending her media attention in the final leg of her campaign.
Pressley signaled on Tuesday that she expected to shake up her own party.
"We won, we won", Pressley says, as she is hugged by numerous people around her.
The 7th District encompasses Boston's residential neighborhoods and its surrounding suburbs, with large Hispanic, black and Asian populations, and is the state's only majority-minority district. She is poised to become the only black member of Massachusetts' mostly male congressional delegation.
He said the party is "getting serious about who its representatives are in terms of not just identity politics but have coalitions resemble the people who are the voters".
