The White House lowered the flag to half-staff in honor of McCain.

By 4:08, the flag once again was at half-staff, which PolitiFact again photographed.

The Vietnam War hero, Senator, and 2008 Republican presidential candidate was remembered for his courage, patriotism and service by fellow Americans and foreign dignitaries.

In a letter to Trump on its Facebook page, the American Legion veterans group had urged the White House "to follow long-established protocol following the death of prominent government officials".

Kennedy, a Democrat, passed away August 25, 2009 at age 77, after a battle with glioblastoma - the same rare type of brain cancer afflicting McCain, who died Saturday at age 81. The White House flag was re-lowered to half-staff this afternoon.

Trump, of course, really didn't like McCain and there was reporting this weekend that he had originally nixed a White House statement on him.

By day's end, Trump had done just that, with no immediate explanation from the White House.

Trump and McCain had a bitter relationship that lasted through McCain's final days.

The marks of respect for McCain came not just from USA presidents and senators, who saw McCain's desk in the Chamber draped in black fabric with a vase of white roses on Monday.

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country", Mr. Trump said in a statement as he ordered the flag atop the White House and elsewhere to fly at half-staff until Mr. McCain's burial on Sunday.

President Donald Trump was not expected to attend any of the services. Others in the administration - Chief of Staff john Kelly, Defence Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser John Bolton - will also represent the administration.

That's standard procedure when a member of the Senate passes away. Trump questioned the decorated Navy pilot's Vietnam heroism and chafed at McCain's vote to kill the president's "Obamacare" repeal.

Since his death on Saturday from cancer, a monument on the shores of the Hanoi lake where McCain was captured has turned into a de facto shrine. In statements on Twitter, first lady Melania Trump and Vice President Mike Pence thanked and honored McCain's service and offered condolences. McCain's funeral is scheduled for Sunday.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the flag should be flown at half-staff "at all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels in the Washington, D.C., area on the day and day after the death of a United States senator, representative, territorial delegate, or the resident commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico".

After Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy of MA died in 2009, President Barack Obama ordered flags at the White House be flown at half-staff for five days.
