Powerful quake on Indonesia's Lombok island kills 91, tourists flee

The US Geological Survey said the shallow quake hit northern Lombok just 10 kilometres underground and was followed by two further secondary quakes and almost two dozen aftershocks.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.0 quake struck early Sunday evening at a depth of 10.5 kilometres.

"When we ran down the corridor, the whole place was evacuating".

The latest quake, which triggered a brief tsunami warning, damaged buildings as far away as Denpasar on Bali, including a department store and the airport terminal, where ceiling panels were shaken loose, authorities said.

Several amateur videos of the quake show people running in panic from houses and building shaking violently due to its intensity. On Lombok, soldiers and other rescuers carried injured people on stretchers and carpets to an evacuation center.

"The lower floors we went down there was more damage visible [there] than at the top [floors]".

"People panicked and scattered on the streets and buildings and houses that had been damaged by the previous natural disaster had become more damaged and collapsed", Sutopo said.

"There was certainly a lot of structural damage to the building". However, an initial warning of a tsunami with waves of up to half a meter was later withdrawn.

"All the hotel guests were running, so I did too".

A strong natural disaster has struck Indonesia's popular tourist island of Lombok, one week after another quake in the same area killed more than a dozen people.

There were no foreigners among the dead and the number of injured stood at 209, BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told a news conference.

Australia's home affairs minister has tweeted that he and his delegation have been safely evacuated in darkness from a Lombok hotel where they have been staying during a regional security conference.

Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his 10th-floor hotel room shook violently and walls cracked. He says the quake "was powerful enough to put us on the floor" and cut power.

Bali's global airport suffered damage to its terminal but the runway was unaffected and operations had returned to normal, disaster agency officials said.

Video aired by Kompas TV showed patients being evacuated from a hospital in Bali's Tabanan district.

The Malaysian embassy says those in Lombok as well as students in Bali are safe following the natural disaster which hit yesterday evening.
