Suarez sends Uruguay into last 16 with hosts Russian Federation

Despite only 3.4 million people to choose from, Uruguay have long punched above their weight in worldwide soccer, lifting the first ever World Cup in 1930 and producing the infamous "Maracanazo" by beating hosts Brazil to win it again in 1950.

Uruguay have qualified for the next round of the World Cup after defeating Saudi Arabia 1-0.

The Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed al-Owais attempted to claim an inswinging corner but got nowhere near the ball, allowing the striker to tap home. Defeat against Uruguay would nearly certainly see them eliminated from the competition, although they also play against Egypt in their final group game. Uruguay can do themselves a massive favour by winning today and rendering their clash with Russian Federation a formality / decider as to who tops group A.

Suarez's goal was by no means pretty, but it did the trick.

At least Suarez, who missed three sitters in Uruguay's 1-0 opening win against Egypt, was his vintage efficient self with his 52nd worldwide goal although he will not have dismissed fears he was not 100 percent fit. "It's a lovely moment and we want to enjoy it", Suarez said.

The Saudi Arabian national team's rough start to World Cup continued on Tuesday, as the team's plane caught fire in midair.

Do you think any of the African teams in Russian Federation will make it out of their formidable groups into the round of 16? Finally, Russia all but sealed their place in the round of 16 with a 3-1 victory over Egypt in their second game of Group A.

"We are more than proud because we've reached the knockout stage at three successive World Cups".

Oscar Tabarez's side missed plenty of opportunities to add further goals, but a toothless Saudi outfit never seriously looked like snatching a point. Jose Gimenez scored the victor for Uruguay in the 89th minute.

"We still have a game to play against Saudi Arabia and we will give our all in that game but our chances (of going to the second round) are minimal", Cuper said.

"Cuper said Salah is desperate to play as much as possible in the World Cup". Uruguay opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Egypt.

They suffered a setback shortly before the interval as veteran Taisir Al-Jassim was replaced by Housain Al-Mogahwi with an apparent thigh injury.
