Cristiano Ronaldo broke Ferenc Puskas' record for the most worldwide goals by a European player with his winning goal for Portugal against Morocco in their 2018 World Cup group match on Wednesday.

The star 33-year-old forward had scored only three goals from 70 shots in his previous three World Cups for Portugal in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

In scoring, Ronaldo bagged his 85th goal for Portugal and moved past Ferenc Puskas (84) to become the highest European goal-scorer in the history of worldwide football.

Portugal was powered by Cristiano Ronaldo's hat trick in its opening match of group play, with his late free kick securing a dramatic 3-3 draw vs. Spain.

Renard's side head into Wednesday's match in Moscow in need of a positive result, having been beaten 1-0 by Iran in their opening Group B match, but Renard accepts stopping Ronaldo could prove an impossible task.

Ronaldo's four goals top the individual scoring chart at this year's World Cup.
