Bukhari is the fourth journalist to be killed by militants in the almost three-decade-long violence in Kashmir.

His murder has been decried by politicians and journalists.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attended the funeral at Shujaat's home in Baramulla. The scourge of terror has reared its ugly head on the eve of Eid. Strongly condemn this act of mindless violence & pray for his soul to rest in peace. "May Shujaat find place in Jannat & May his loved ones find strength at this hard time".

India's Interior Minister Rajnath Singh described him as a courageous and fearless journalist.

His killing is third such tragic incident in Srinagar's Press Colony. "He would often fight for the issues of people through his columns and various discussions but alas this voice of people stands silenced today brutally", she said. Extremely shocked & pained at his death. "My thoughts and prayers are with his bereaved family", he said on his Twitter handle. She said terrorism had "hit a new low" with Bukhari's killing "to undermine" the government's "attempts to restore peace". Last month when the Centre announced a unilateral ceasefire in Kashmir for the holy month of Ramzan, Bukhari was among those who welcomed the decision, terming it as a "glimmer of hope for common people who have been suffering due to the continuous grind of violence". Kashmir News Service condoles the demise of Bukhari and extends condolences to the bereaved family. "He will be missed", Gandhi said in a tweet. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed, a police spokesperson said. But above all, it must ensure safety and security of J&K citizens and create a conducive environment for journalists to exercise their right to freedom of press freely. His killing is an attack on the freedom of press and the civil society's attempts at resolving Kashmir through talks and mediation.

Bukhari was the editor of Kashmiri newspaper Rising Kashmir. "With a few hours to go for Eid this is bad", Banerjee tweeted. In 1991, the editor of "Alsafa", Mohammed Shaban Vakil, was killed by militants of Hizbul Muahideen.

Arsenal fans bemoan tough start after seeing Premier League fixtures
They will play promoted Fulham at Wembley in their first home game of the season on the weekend of 18-19 August. The Blues' defence of the Premier League title kicks off with one of the toughest of tests - a trip to Arsenal.

In the attack, Bukhari and his SPO are said to be injured. Media in Kashmir has been operating in a testing situation in Kashmir for all these decades of crisis. "Prayers and condolences for them and their families on this awful night", he said.

It added that the "terror attack" showed that lives of journalists were not safe. The state and central governments must enhance security for all journalists in Jammu and Kashmir.

The attackers fired "from a close range", the police said.

The assassination has triggered fear among journalists, who have lost several colleagues to suspected militants' bullets in the past and many of whom are perceived through the prism of the hyper-nationalist propaganda run by some national television channels.

Rising Kashmir's defiance in face of terrorist forces reminds us of Charlie Hebdo episode, when the French magazine brought out their edition at scheduled date even when half of its staffers were killed by terrorists.
