Francis expressed hope Sunday that Tuesday's talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore will "contribute to the development of a positive path that will assure a future of peace for the Korean Peninsula and the entire world".
He added that the administration is prepared to provide North Korea with unprecedented security assurances and will ensure that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".
North Korea's state-run news agency said Kim plans to discuss "the issue of building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and other issues of mutual concern".

The historic handshake between Trump and Kim is to occur Tuesday on the 12-hectare grounds of the luxurious Capella Hotel on Singapore's resort island of Sentosa.

Trump also called the leaders of South Korea and Japan in advance of the summit, Pompeo said.
Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which the Obama administration had reached with Iran, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation.
