Qualcomm has focused a lot on network performance too on the Snapdragon 850 chip with Gigabit LTE speeds expected to be 20% faster than their last generation chip. The company still believes that longer battery life, an always connected device that is instant on, and a fast and constant wireless LTE connection are ingredients for a solution that consumers want and that is not being addressed by Intel or AMD today.

The chip is essentially a Snapdragon 845, the chip found in high-end Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9, but beefed up slightly so it is suitable for use in PCs.

In addition, there is increased support for artificial intelligence (AI) and multimedia applications.

The Snapdragon 850 boasts a 30 percent increase in performance, three times the AI performance, and a 20 percent increase in battery life and Gigabit LTE speed compared to its predecessor. The new Qualcomm X20 LTE modem - Cat.18 LTE - also supports almost all global operators for Gigabit LTE, by reducing the Listed Assisted Access (LAA) licensed requirement to only 10MHz. "To truly expand this category, our work with mobile leaders like Samsung is important to help us deliver the next generation of AlwaysOn, Always Connected PCs to consumers". Native DSD playback, virtual surround sound, high dynamic range audio, and aptX HD wireless audio are also supported. The company will use the chip for its upcoming always connected PC which is said to be due later this year. "We know this is a multi-year effort to revolutionize mobile computing". It can be believed to be a successor to the Snapdragon 835 which was launched for Windows 10 devices previous year.

Qualcomm revealed the platform at Computex yesterday.
