The eruption is estimated to affect about 1.7 million people, according to officials, with most living in the colonial city of Antigua and nearby Guatemala City, the country's capital.

Farmers covered in ash fled for their lives as civil defense staffers tried to relocate them to shelters during the event.

"It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the Rodeo village".

After awakening on Sunday, and for the second time this year, the Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) has generated strong pyroclastic flows in the Barrancas de Cenizas, Mineral, Seca, Taniluya, Las Lajas and Barranca Honda localities, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction in Guatemala (Conred) said.

"This is a deadly eruption", tweeted volcanologist Janine Krippner of Concord University.

Sacatepezuez television showed images of the volcano's damage including the charred landscape and three bodies laid partially buried in ash-colored debris from the volcano.

The Fuego Volcano in eruption, seen from Alotenango municipality, Sacatepequez department, about 40 miles southwest of Guatemala City.

"Not everyone was able to get out".

It urged residents living near the volcano to evacuate immediately and warned residents of the towns of Chimaltenango, Sacatepequez and Escuintla to watch out for volcanic rocks and ash.

A river of lava spilled into El Rodeo village, destroying houses and burning people inside, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (Conred). "I think they ended up buried", Consuelo Hernandez, a resident of the village of El Rodeo, told the newspaper Diario de Centroamerica.

Tourists can take guided tours up the Volcan de Fuego's neighbour peak to view the frequent volcanic activity.

The Foreign Office advised Britons travelling to and from Guatemala to check with their airlines after La Aurora International Airport is expected to remain closed until at least 2pm (8pm BST) on Monday.
