Republican Missouri Governor Eric Greitens is set to RESIGN

After just over a year on the job, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens announced that he will resign the office.

Greitens announced his resignation Tuesday.

A short time later, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner said in a statement that her office had reached "fair and just resolution" on criminal charges against Greitens. But political analysts say the man who had aspirations of becoming president could find a political revival challenging, especially in a #MeToo environment where he would be vulnerable to attack for allegedly taking a compromising photo of a woman during an extramarital affair in 2015.

That accusation was at the center of a now scuttled felony invasion of privacy case, though a special prosecutor continues to investigate the matter.

Missouri's attorney general, Josh Hawley, a Republican, however backed Gardner's charge last month and said: "These are serious charges - and an important reminder that no one is above the law in Missouri".

He said Greitens lacks deep support among Missouri's Republican power brokers, and his acknowledged extramarital affair included claims of sexual misconduct.

It also could free up money. Greitens denied any violence and said the allegations amounted to a "political witch hunt". Our review of this case, as I have stated before, will be pursued without fear or favor.

Greitens called a press conference after an unfavorable ruling earlier in his computer tampering trial related to allegations he illegally obtained a donor list to aid his 2016 election campaign from a veterans' charity he founded in 2007, according to local media.

The resignation ends a month long scandal that revealed detailed and tawdry sexual encounters between the governor and a woman with whom he was having an affair. "But I have not broken any laws or committed any offence worthy of this treatment", he said. Mike Parson is the current lieutenant governor in the Show-Me-State.

I love Missouri, and I love our people.

"While I cannot force Mr. Greitens to take personal accountability for his actions, there are things I can do", she said.

The Missouri Legislature began meeting in special session less than two weeks ago to consider impeachment. She said that she developed a "crush" on Greitens, but when she saw him in the salon in March 2015, he "moved his hand up her leg "all the way up to [her] crotch" without her consent".

Most recently a state House investigative committee has been attempting to collect information about another nonprofit organization with close ties to Greitens.

The governor, who also served as a White House fellow and wrote a best-selling book, entered the 2016 gubernatorial race as an outsider.
