Congo's long experience of Ebola and its vast, remote geography mean outbreaks are often localised and relatively easy to isolate and snuff out.
But Ikoko Impenge and Bikoro are situated not far from the banks of the Congo River, a major artery for trade and transport upstream from the capital Kinshasa. The ongoing epidemic is located in the Bikoro health zone, located in Equateur province, in western Democratic Republic of the Congo and on the border with the Republic of Congo.
Some African carriers including: Cronos Airlines, Air Cote D' Ivoire, Asky Airlines, African World Airlines, Rwanda Air, Kenyan Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways operate flights into their operational hubs that link Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nigeria have already taken measures to stop the disease from entering the country through its border, by tightening security at several entry points. DRC's health ministry said that it had sent a team of 12 experts to find the epicenter of the outbreak and the affected villages, and trace the new contacts of the disease.
Ebola is most feared for the internal and external bleeding it can cause in its victims owing to damage done to blood vessels.
