Authorities say that to their knowledge there are no survivors after a cargo plane carrying nine members of the Puerto Rican Air National Guard crashed on a highway in Georgia.

Jeff Bezore, of the Georgia Air National Guard's 165th Air Wing, said he couldn't say how many people in total were on the plane, which crashed Wednesday around 11:30 a.m.

Dahlen said the plane was probably more than 50 years old and was headed to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance Regeneration Group at Davis Monthan Air Force Base - also known as a boneyard for old planes.

Black smoke rose into the sky from a section of the plane that appeared to have crashed into a median on the road.

According to United States media reports, it is a C-130 Hercules military aeroplane that crashed.

"We're brothers and sisters, we supported one other in these missions, and so no matter who it is, it hurts us whenever something like this happens", Master Sgt. Roger Parsons of the Georgia Air National Guard said at a news conference Wednesday.

The plane is a cargo C-130 "Hercules", which belongs to Puerto Rico's National Guard.

An aging C-130 Hercules that rescued and resupplied USA citizens after last year's hurricanes crashed onto a highway in Georgia during what was supposed to be its final flight, killing all nine Puerto Ricans on board.

"Please join me in thoughts and prayers for the victims, their families and the great men and women of the National Guard", Trump tweeted Wednesday. Jose Rafael Roman. The mayor of Manati, which is along Puerto Rico's north coast, said Roman was a father of two young boys and his wife is five months pregnant with a baby girl.

The plane crashed at the intersection of usually busy roads.

We're told the investigation could take weeks.

Dahlen said initial information indicated there were five to nine people aboard the plane, which was heading to Arizona.

The crash did not occur at the airport, she said.

"I looked over to my right and seen the plane at very low altitude and making a hard left turn to the ground", he said.

A tweet from the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association showed the tail of the plane protruding from thick smoke and fire.

They were aboard the C-130 plane when it came down beside a highway intersection near the local airport in the coastal city of Savannah.
