This announcement comes not long after Paramount Pictures confirmed it was working on new Star Trek projects. Fritz also tweeted, "Paramount is working on two new Star Trek films, says CEO Jim Gianopulos".

S.J. Clarkson will be the first woman to direct a film in the "Star Trek" franchise. The movie would be seperate from Quentin Tarantino's potential Star Trek movie, which reportedly will be a different timeline that the current movie series. That would be a new territory for Star Trek, which has, for the most part, kept its film series focused on one crew at the time.

At the beginning of April, Zachary Quinto revealed there were three scripts being worked on at the moment. Today's statement from Paramount's CEO appears to confirm these statements. The other could be the project announced in the summer of 2016 - to be written by J.D.

Rain chances this evening, cooler weather and sunshine this weekend
Highs on Thursday afternoon should be well into the 50s, if not the lower 60s by the afternoon. Our best chances for rain will be later this afternoon and into the evening commute.

We've heard whispers and rumors of a time travel adventure featuring Chris Hemsworth as Kirk's (Chris Pine) dad.

"If you told me five years ago that an nearly silent film starring the very amusing guy Jim from "The Office" would have been a hit at Paramount, I would have said, 'Well, I should go work at Paramount, '" said Gianopulos, who joined the studio a year ago.

Since the third of the rebooted "Star Trek" movies recouped nearly $350 million globally, Paramount's high-profile flops have included "Ben-Hur", "mother!" and Matt Damon vehicles "Suburbicon" and "Downsizing". It's also worth noting that this morning Viacom announced better than expected financial results, including Paramount's return to profitability. Many box office watchers believe confusion over how Rogue One: A Star Wars Story related to the characters and events introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have hurt its box office (that said, it still cleared a billion dollars).
