The Downfall of Matt Harvey: Can Harvey Rebound after Move?

Just yesterday, he candidly told reporters that he sees himself as a starting pitcher.

The fearsome fivesome of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler took a turn together in the rotation last week for the first time and the results have given the Mets a reason to be excited.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway announced Saturday that Matt Harvey will be moved to the bullpen. He's given up 26 hits, four of them home runs, in 21 innings. With Harvey pitching the way he is, you cant trust him in late-inning situations with the game on the line.

The next time Matt Harvey takes the mound, he'll do so as a reliever. A manager in the Major League Baseball must place the best team out there, day in and day out with a keen eye on the bigger, 162-game picture.

Only two years ago, the idea of Matt Harvey earning a demotion to the bullpen would have seemed as insane as, I don't know, the idea of a porn star suing the president.

The New York Mets are atop the National League East. In his final start before the demotion, he went six innings giving up six earned runs on eight hits, striking out four, and walking one in a Mets 12-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves. The Mets have relied on their pitching staff getting back to health after a disaster last season.

Flyers stay alive with second win
Defensively, the Pittsburgh Penguins are allowing three goals per game and are killing 80 percent of their opponents power plays. For the visiting Flyers, the offense will be coordinated by Claude Giroux , who's got 69 assists and 34 goals this year.

In the first three innings of his start in Atlanta, Harvey was hammered for six runs on seven hits, putting NY in a 6-0 hole they were not able to climb out of in what became a 12-4 loss.

"That last three innings I think I was able to break through that mental block I was feeling every time I went out there", he said. Right now I need to work on it, that's in the bullpen.

Harvey now sports a 6.00 ERA through four starts this season. With Jason Vargas returning to the rotation, the Mets had to move somebody out, and Harvey and his 6.00 ERA are the choice.

Following Thursday night's 12-4 loss to the Braves, Callaway did not say whether Harvey will get another start, which is now scheduled for Wednesday night in St. Louis. But he lost the entire 2014 season to Tommy John surgery, and his 2016 and 2017 seasons were limited by a right shoulder problem and surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. We're not going to react on one outing.

"We admire the passion and the pride he has, and that's a big part of what's going to get him back to being a productive guy", Ricco said of Harvey.
