A two-time victor of the Academy Award for Best Director, the "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus" helmer also won three Golden Globes, the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prize of the Jury (for "Taking Off"), the Golden Bear at Berlin ("The People vs. Larry Flynt"), a BAFTA award, and numerous other accolades.

Actor Michael Douglas gave Forman a second chance, hiring him to direct "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", which Douglas was co-producing.

In this file photo taken on March 25, 1985 Czech-born United States film director Milos Forman holds up his Oscar trophy for his film "Amadeus" at the 57th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood.

Forman's other films include Hair (1979), Ragtime (1981), Valmont (1989) and The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), which handed him another best director Oscar nomination, as well as Man On The Moon (1999) and Goya's Ghosts (2006).

He picked up an Academy Award in 1975 for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The first film he made in the U.S., 1970's Taking Off, was a flop.

Jan Hrebejk, a leading Czech film director and a friend and former classmate of Forman's wife Martina, told Reuters news agency the director was a gifted storyteller and a great person.

Yes, she knows a guy: Lando Calrissian ( Donald Glover ) and the Millennium Falcon . For one, Alden Ehrenreich definitely seems more like Han Solo .

Three years later while Forman was in bed with a fever, the Gestapo intruded again, this time at the family home.

He died on Friday in the USA after a short illness, Martina told Czech news agency CTK. "And right there after the show, I met for the first time Peter Shaffer, and I told him that if he would ever consider making a movie, I would be very interested". Both of Forman's parents died in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, and he wound up being raised by relatives before entering the Prague Film Academy.

Forman won a Best Director Oscar for "The People v. Larry Flint."

"Man on the Moon", based on the life of cult hero Andy Kaufman, did win its star, Jim Carrey, a Golden Globe. The film starred Tom Hulce as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Forman's first wife was actress Jana Brejchova. They also had twin sons.
