This is the third time this year Israeli forces have attacked Hamas terror tunnels. The IDF also said it continues to hold Hamas responsible for "all occurrences in and from the Gaza Strip".

However, later on Sunday in a phone call, a second IDF spokesperson refused to repeat the statement that Hamas militants had recently operated in the tunnel.

Israel warplanes attacked 18 "terror targets belonging to Hamas" in Gaza in response to the blast, which severely wounded two of the soldiers, and a subsequent Palestinian rocket attack on southern Israel.

The deadly incursion in Gaza by Israeli forces predominantly featured operations to dismantle tunnelling operations as a main prong in their efforts to neutralize attacks stemming from Gaza; the other being rocket cross-border strikes.

Israel last went public with an operation against a Gaza tunnel in the area in January, saying that the secret passage had also run through neighboring Egypt.

"On the basis of quality intelligence and groundbreaking technology, Israel is destroying Hamas tunnels one-by-one", Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a statement.

'Hamas invests enormous resources in building underground terror tunnels instead of investing in the Gaza Strip and providing welfare to its residents.

Local businesses and community members walked in the parade handing out candy and waving at the crowd. For others though, this year marked the first time they were watching the small canal town's parade .

The incident was the latest in a fresh wave of violence in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Israel, sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6.

Sunday's border-crossing tunnel was first discovered by the Israel Defense Forces in July 2014 and was partially destroyed during the war, Conricus told reporters. Hamas claimed that the tunnel had been built for the objective of smuggling goods into Gaza.

"The time has come for the worldwide community to realize that the assistance funds to Gaza are being buried underground".

"It was a subterranean complex, a military complex", said Cornicus, the Israeli military spokesman.

Israeli army and police raided his home, searched it and interrogated members of his family.

Adraee said that the Israeli military tanks destroyed a "monitoring point" of Hamas.
