Wang was at the frontline of Xi's anti-corruption purge, heading the party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, which has punished 1.5 million officials in the past five years, from low-level officials to civilian bigwigs and generals.
Jinping is also elected as the head of the powerful Central Military Commission, the apex command of the Chinese military.
Wang's elevation today is regarded as yet another step to change the rules followed by CPC as now he would continue in power despite crossing the retirement age.
Yanmei Xie, a China policy analyst for Gavekal Dragonomics in Beijing, said appointing Wang could extend decision-making beyond the seven-member Politburo Standing Committee, the party's top body and a key component of the collective leadership system set up after Mao's tumultuous rule.
"Wang will have as much authority as Xi grants him", said political commentator Deng Yuwen. China's rubber-stamp parliament approved Xi's appointment to a second five-year term on Saturday in Beijing, days after repealing constitutional provisions barring him from a serving a third.
