US national security adviser H.R. McMaster said on Monday that Washington is optimistic about an opportunity for President Donald Trump to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un but is determined to keep up pressure on Pyongyang to denuclearize. "Therefore, we request that the two countries, USA and North Korea, use this summit meeting to find the correct path to reconciliation and peace", Ra told the WCC.

North Korea has notoriously violated worldwide agreements on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, walked out of the Six Party Talks in 2008, and breached United Nations sanctions on the regime.

"Our president, Moon Jae-in, and the government believe that various advances toward achieving the goal of peace and denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula were made with active support and contribution from President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government", he said.

Talking to North Korea may make sense, but at a lower level while maintaining "maximum pressure" sanctions.

It is unclear what the US government might offer in return. Now the new United States president has agreed to talk with him, one on one.

President Trump's decision to meet North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, by the end of May poses both risks and opportunities for China.

The South Korean leader might offer to reopen the Kaesong industrial center, which was closed after a North Korean nuclear test in 2016.

Kono declined to say what that action should be, but South Korea's presidential Blue House quoted him as saying that the breakthrough on talks with North Korea was a near "miracle".

Mattis was among the advisers in the White House on Thursday when Trump chose to accept Kim's offer to meet. Curiously, North Korea's closely-controlled state-run TV news service didn't show any of the recent Winter Olympics.

The officials' comments followed the surprise announcement last week that President Donald Trump has agreed to meet the North's Kim Jong Un by May.

There is hope on many sides that some kind of agreement will finally be reached, hopefully an end to North Korea's nuclear and missile program, in exchange for recognition and economic assistance.

Xi said China looked forward to smooth talks between the two Koreas and between the United States and North Korea and substantive progress in the denuclearization process and normalization of ties.

When Suh met with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono on Monday, Kono asked if the abductee issue was discussed during the South Korean envoys' trip to the North.

Secretary Tillerson also said it would take "some weeks" to arrange the meeting.

"I think at the moment Japan, South Korea and China are better agents for a deal", Blaney said. That's surely unknown. The hermetic kingdom of North Korea is one of the most closed countries in the world.

Many people were shocked last week by news of the planned talks between the leaders of the United States and North Korea.

Kim has pushed his isolated nation closer to having a nuclear-tipped missile that can strike the USA mainland.
