China Daily said that any such suggestion showed an "ignorance of China's reality".

The National People's Congress approved two additional constitutional amendments, including "the addition of a political philosophy called Xi Jinping Thought to the constitution, and the creation of politically driven "supervisory commissions" tasked with investigating party members and civil servants", The Guardian reported.

Take the National Supervision Commission, an anti-graft body with power over China's entire public service which will now have equal standing with the country's court systems. "But from America's perspective, this administration has been very clear of pushing back against the Chinese threat".

CHINA'S parliament has passed historic constitutional changes that abolish term limits to let President Xi Jinping rule indefinitely.

Jinping who is also the head of the party and the head of the military has become the most powerful man in China since the party founder Chairman Mao Zedong.

Today's Communist Party is different from the way it was during both the Mao and Deng eras, Rittenberg said. One would write into the constitution the term "community of common destiny", also sometimes referred to as the "community of shared future" (命运共同体), an amorphous concept that places China at the center of a harmonious global community of peace and prosperity, in implicit contrast with the United States' hegemonic, self-interested control of the present worldwide system (China Brief, February 26, 2018).

The other proposed amendment adds the phrase "patriots devoted to the great renewal of the Chinese race" to the list of groups to be consolidated in a "united front" under the "leadership of the Communist Party of China". Xi, christened as "lingxiu" - a leader with highest prestige, is aggressively pushing Chinese military's modernisation to make the world's largest army a mightier force capable of winning modern wars. However, many have anxious about the possible return of China to despotic eras. The amendment also lifts term limits for the vice presidency.

"The legacy of Deng Xiaoping's efforts to avoid lifelong presidency have been abolished completely", he said.

Revising part of the Constitution is a major decision made by the CPC Central Committee from the overall and strategic height of upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, said Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, when joining NPC deputies in a panel discussion on Wednesday.

The Parliament, the National People's Congress, overwhelmingly passed the constitutional changes on Sunday, as widely expected. This revision was the biggest change to the Chinese constitution after 36 years.

"That doesn't bode well for hard reforms ahead: Will the CCP be able to raise the retirement age?" The community of common destiny is also tightly linked with the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi's premier global initiative.

"A second-term president with nothing to lose might have been in a better position to enact these changes and accept the blame before stepping down".

Mao set up the President's office in 1954 and quit the post after five years, giving it to Liu Shaoqi, handpicked by him. Xi will practically be able to implement any policy he wants.

"Term limits, avoidance of a cult of personality, and the end of routine political purges - all of these were part of China's reform-era leaders' efforts to steer the nation out of the chaos and instability of the Maoist era", said Carl Minzner, a professor of law at Fordham University in NY and author of a new book on Xi's authoritarianism. Liu was a puppet President and fell out of favour during Mao's Cultural Revolution.
