It's Time to Place Your Bets - the 90th Oscars Are Here

You're probably aware that the 90th Academy Awards are nearly here - but you might not know that people actually bet on them.

Since 1929, the glamorous event has captured the imaginations of film fans around the world.

In 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was formed.

Relive all the drama of last year's awards.

Emma Stone, who won Best Actress for La La Land in 2017, was one of the first presenters announced for this year's ceremony, to reveal the Best Actor victor.

Michael Jackson once paid $2.6 million to snag the 1939 best picture gong for Gone With The Wind and (despite being an Oscar-winner himself) Steven Spielberg shelled out $866,607 for Clark Gable's Best Actor award for It Happened One Night. I think a lot of people saw the movie wanting one thing and got something else, other people went in with no expectations and were perfectly happy with it. And I like when a movie can do that which is why if there's going to be a surprise on Sunday night at the Oscars. Of the rest, Sally Hawkins is outstanding and very, er.committed, in The Shape of Water, while Margot Robbie has marked her transition to serious actress with I, Tonya.

One of the few films to garner a 99 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, top critics: HuffPo, Vanity Faire and Fandango, are all forecasting a last minute upset that could anoint "Get Out" with the Oscar's highest honor.

1953 - The Oscars are televised for the first time. I'm going to stick my neck out though, and predict that Oscar is going to make my fellow columnist's night and plump for Three Billboards.

Mummies with the oldest tattoos
The practice of tattooing appears to be 1,000 years older than anyone knew. Mr Antoine told The Times: "It is the earliest use of figurative tattoos".

1968 - The Oscars awards ceremony is postponed for two days because of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4.

The nominees for the 90th Academy Awards were announced at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, on January 23, 2018, at 5:22 a.m. PST via global live stream from the Academy and by actors Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis. Katharine Hepburn wins for "The Lion in Winter" and Barbra Streisand won for "Funny Girl". I'm pulling for Jordan Peele (for best director) but I think it will be Guillermo del Toro. Sacheen Littlefeather, an Indian activist, appears onstage in traditional Apache dress in Brando's place but declines the statuette.

Best Actress: Frances McDormand is the favorite (1-to-20 odds) to win in this category for her role in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

2003 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" pulls off the largest awards sweep in Oscar history, winning in every category for which it was nominated. The film also won the top prize at the BAFTA awards and the Golden Globes.

None of them are favorites to win. The audience responds with a standing ovation. Revisit the moment that Moonlight won best picture - after a little bit of confusion - at the 2017 Oscars.

2013 - Jennifer Lawrence trips and falls on her way to accept the best actress award for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook". There are only two or three movies out of a nine that you would consider movies as sort of groundbreaking or deserved maverick status.

Apart from that, Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will host for a second consecutive year, making him the first person to host back-to-back ceremonies since Billy Crystal in 1997 and 1998.
