Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also won best film as well as best British film at Sunday night's award ceremony.

The movie also picked up best original screenplay and individual honors for Frances McDormand (best leading actress) and Sam Rockwell (best supporting actor).

I don't think they are quite done, it's a beautifully challenging role.

"But I want you to know that I stand in full solidarity with my sisters tonight in black", she said.

Accepting her best actress accolade, McDormand, who chose not to wear black, quoted her on-screen character who has "a little trouble with compliance".
