A shooting erupted Wednesday outside the suburban Washington headquarters of the National Security Agency, a secretive intelligence organisation responsible for global USA electronic eavesdropping, leaving at least one person injured, officials said. The statement said weapons were fired but "preliminary reports do not presently indicate that there are injuries attributable to gunfire".
Larry Whitley, a spokesman for Fort Meade police, said one person was injured in the incident and taken to a hospital.
A National Security Agency police officer opened fire Wednesday morning on a vehicle at an entrance to the intelligence agency's campus in Maryland, law enforcement sources told CBS News. One person in custody was being questioned and appeared to be cooperating with authorities, CBS News justice and homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports.
It is not the first attack on the NSA headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland.
Route 32 is closed due to the ongoing police investigation by the FBI, ABC News said.

US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident.
Meade officials confirmed that the incident happened on the Canine Road gate to the NSA.
'We will continue to provide updates as they become available, ' the White House said in a statement.
In that incident, the two men in the Ford SUV were dressed in women's clothes "but not in an attempt to disguise themselves from authorities", an Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman said at the time. The NSA employs roughly 36,000 people.
