White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned Tuesday after allegations made by his two ex-wives.

Porter, 40, has been credited with working with chief of staff John Kelly to control the flow of information to the president.

"He is a friend, a confidante and a trusted professional". "He would belittle me constantly about my weight, my sexiness, how good I looked to him or didn't look to him".

"These outrageous allegations are simply false. I took the photos given to the media almost 15 years ago and the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described", he said. "I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign", Porter said in a statement Sanders read from the podium.

"My commitment to public service speaks for itself", Mr Porter said. "I have always put duty to country first and treated others with respect".

"I have worked directly with Rob Porter almost every day for the a year ago and the person I know is someone of the highest integrity and exemplary character", the Daily Mail quoted Sanders as saying.

But The Intercept followed up on the Daily Mail's story on Wednesday, publishing photos Holderness took of black eye after Porter allegedly punched her on vacation in 2005.

His abuse started on their honeymoon, she said.

In it, Willoughby said she received an emergency protective order against Porter after verbal and physical abuse.

The accusations were first reported in the Daily Mail and include accounts of physical and emotional abuse. "He lashed out and was really angry and both under his breath and explicitly to me called me a "f***ing b***h" and 'f***ing ridiculous.' He accused me of not caring about him or his needs". When I found the keys and gave them to him he stayed on the porch and would not leave for another 10-15 minutes until I threatened to call the police.

Amtrak train collides with CSX train in SC
Amtrak says CSX Corp's people padlocked the switch that diverted the Amtrak train onto the side track, where it hit the CSX train. Two people were killed in a crash involving a freight train and an Amtrak passenger train early Sunday in SC , authorities said.

"In a series of crisis meetings, the statement was drafted by Hicks, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Kushner's White House spokesman, Josh Raffel". "I think he was shocked that he had lost control to that extent."... "And the majority of the issues he suffers from are very personal and intimate".

A senior White House aide told Politico that Kelly knew about the protective order, which prevented Porter from receiving a full security clearance.

'It's not a matter of "believe" or "don't believe",' she told DailyMail.com, straddling both sides of what had become a heated dispute between a trusted colleague and the women who claimed he abused them.

"I don't know how you would do that job without a security clearance", the former official said.

"Rob Porter has been effective in his role as staff secretary", Sanders said.

In a statement, Porter denied the allegations, which were first published on Wednesday by the Daily Mail.

"I am heartbroken by today's allegations", Senator Hatch said in a statement.

"It's incredibly discouraging to see such a vile attack on such a decent man", Hatch said.

According to the Mail, Mr Porter has recently been romantically linked with White House communications director Hope Hicks.

Kelly's decision to go to bat for Porter deeply frustrated White House staffers, sources told me.
