Lawmakers want to ban laundry detergent from looking tasty

In an effort to combat the epidemic, the New York Post reports several state lawmakers are proposing legislation demanding Tide and other detergent companies not make the pod-like items appear so tasty to children.

They also want legislation requiring stricter packaging standards for the laundry detergent in NY, including a requirement that packets are not "easily permeated by a child's bite".

The bill wants to require laundry companies to make the pods all one color with non-see through packaging and warning labels on each pod.

The increase is likely due to the Tide Pod challenge, a unsafe viral trend in which teenagers bite into or eat the laundry pods while recording themselves on social media.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers says poison control centers have received more than 150 calls this year because of teens eating the laundry detergent pods.

Simotas and Holyman say that the bright-colored packaging, appealing smell, and squishy texture of the pods can tempt children or adults with dementia into thinking the packets are edible.

The legislation is a sensible measure to address the products' dangers, they said.

The lawmakers pushing the bill also wrote a letter to Proctor & Gamble, the manufacturers of Tide Pods asking them to remove them from store shelves.

"However, even the most stringent standards and protocols, labels and warnings can't prevent intentional abuse fueled by poor judgment and the desire for popularity", Taylor said in the statement.

"They key is that you just shouldn't eat it", he said.

Assemblyman Karl Brabenec said he thinks the state should be focusing on other priorities.

"And the people behind this legislation should know that it's not the manufacturers who are to blame when people make stupid decisions with their products".
