Two Alabama-made brews have tied for the ranking of best beer in the state, according to the official magazine of the American Homebrewers Association.
Zymurgy Magazine named Yellowhammer Brewing’s Rebellion and Folklore Brewing & Meadery’s Shadowcaster Porter the top brews you can buy in Alabama. The ranking was featured last week on Business Insider.
Zymurgy developed the list after asking AHA members to cast votes for the best beers in the country. Using that data, Zymurgy came up with the top 10 beers in the U.S. and the best beers by state.
Ethan Couch, co-founder and general manager at Yellowhammer, said the acclaim from the American Homebrewers Association “means a lot to us.”
“Our Rebellion Lager has really caught on this past year in the taproom, and is in contention to be our No. 1 seller in 2017,” he told AL.com. “Being that it’s the go-to favorite of our head brewer, Keith Yager, I know he’s excited to see it succeed.”
Folklore Brewing & Meadery head brewer Jeremy Pate said they would put their Shadowcaster Porter against any robust border in America.
“It is brewed with English specialty malt and a malt forward balance to the bitterness,” he said. “We’ve made porter ice cream beer floats with them for fun and at 7.5 percent ABV, fairly formidable in strength.”
Yellowhammer is in the middle of a major expansion at its facility at Campus No. 805 in west Huntsville. The brewery is spending $1.2 million on 8,000 square feet of new production space, an event hall, a biergarten for small concerts and private parties, and a small-scale distillery to serve the taproom and provide take-home beverages to customers.
Couch anticipates a fall grand opening.
“We are really looking forward to having more production capabilities, getting our distillery churning, and having more space to entertain with a new event center and biergarten,” he said.
